Onen：可写成 Ónen，为 anna-「给予」的第一人称过去式，字尾的 –n 是第一人称的字尾，整个字意思是「我给予」

I：单数冠词 "the"

Estel：小写的estel是“希望”的意思，特指信仰上的“希望”，这里是大写的Estel，是Elrond当初认Aragorn为养子时给他起的小名

Edain：小写的edain 是“人类”adan的复数型"men, human beings"，这里大写是特指「努曼诺尔人」Dúnedain（也就是登丹人）

ú-：用以表示否定句的字首，会触发软音变音（soft mutation）
chebin：其动词根为 heb-，意为「保留、持有」，hebin 为它的第一人称单数现在式，而前面由於 ú而触发软音变音，使字首的h被浊化为ch，变为 chebin

anim：第一人称单数的反身代名词间接受格 "for myself"「为我自己」

整句是：I gave Hope to the Dunedain, I have kept no hope for myself.
